Myths About Varicose Veins - "You should wait until you've had your family before getting your veins fixed"
This is advice given by most doctors and nurses still today - despite it being completely wrong, as well as illogical. It is also against the current research.
As we have already seen in this myths about veins section, pregnancy does not cause varicose veins, but it does make veins that are already malfunctioning and on the way to forming varicose veins worse.
Therefore the sooner the veins are fixed:
- The less damage will be done to the skin of the lower legs by the pump failure
- The fewer number of veins will have lost the valves so the quicker and less extensive the treatment will be
- The smaller the extent of the inflammation so the easier the treatment and the quicker the recovery
- The sooner suffering can be fixed - before the worsening and increased suffering from worsening veins during pregnancy
HOWEVER - and this is a big however - these advantages will only be found if the veins are sorted out properly - i.e.
- The operation is planned on Duplex Ultrasound findings
- The latest techniques are used to reduce the risk of the veins re-connecting and coming back in future years (i.e. EVLA, VNUS Closure®, FAST™, TRLOP etc) - using the protocols and methods pioneered and developed at The Whiteley Clinic.
- If "traditional" methods of veins surgery are used (i.e. operating by guess work without Duplex Ultrasound and using older techniques such as tying and stripping that allow neovascularisation) then this benefit may not be found.
